This forum uses what they call Direct Messages that work a little differently from the private messages you may be used to on most other types of forums. Gone is the folder paradigm with an inbox, sent and trash, etc., but the functionality is mostly the same. It's just that your message conversations are stored as threads in your messaging area.
Links to direct message others are everywhere. Hover over a person's avatar and when their mini-profile pops up, there's a direct message link. Click the envelope icon next to your name under the banner to go to your messaging area. You can create a new message there with ease too.
There is one big difference is when messaging more than one person at a time. It creates a message that acts like a thread and every person receiving the message can see the original sender comments as well as those by all the other recipients in the message. It's like a private party!
People can leave the message conversation and the creator of the message can add others to the conversation.
It is like having your own private thread to talk to other members. It is different but easy to get the hang of. Just be aware that if you are in a private message with multiple people, everyone that is part of that message can see what you post..
Message Privacy
Direct messages between members can not be read or viewed by staff and are indeed private except under the following conditions:
If a direct message is "reported" then that message and that message alone is visible to staff.
Example Scenario: You are having a private conversation with someone that has gone back and forth with multiple replies in both directions then one of the participants in that message clicks the "Report" button..
A link to the reported post shows up for staff to review that contains the entire contents of the reported message but None of the other messages in the conversation can be viewed.
Under investigation as of this writing is the staff's ability to edit or delete reported inappropriate direct messages. Additional information will be posted when things change.
Profile Posts
Posts on your and other's profiles are public. They are somewhat analogous to posting on someone's wall. You can make short comments on your own profile to update your status and do the same on other's. Profile posts show up in recent activity lists so it is easy to see other member's profile posts.
You are in charge of posts on your profile. You can edit or delete your own or delete the ones from others
To make a post or view someone's profile, hover their username for the pop up then click their user name. Bingo!
Please feel to ask questions if you need help. There's a lot of new stuff here but you'll soon get the hang of it.

(update 5/22)
Support ticket submitted confirms that staff can only view a reported direct message, not delete or edit it. You direct messages are indeed private. I n some cases maybe a little too private?
