Fifty years after Viking landed on Mars, the most important question it raised remains deliberately unanswered: did the Viking biology experiments detect living organisms in the Martian soil?

Not fossils. Not “ancient habitability.” Not ambiguous carbon fragments extracted from crushed rock. Life. Now. Active metabolism. Something in the soil eating and farting.

That was the question Gilbert V. Levin’s Labeled Release (LR) experiment was designed to answer in 1976. The method was elegant. Viking scooped Martian soil into a small chamber and injected a nutrient solution — popularly known as “chicken soup” — containing radioactive carbon (the label part). If microbes were present and metabolized the nutrients, they would release radioactive gas. The instrument would detect that release. Then the experiment would compare the result with heat-sterilized controls.

The result was not a shrug. It was not a null. It was positive.

Both Viking landers, separated by thousands of kilometers, produced gas-release responses after nutrient injection. Heat-treated controls greatly reduced or eliminated the response. The active samples behaved differently from sterilized ones. By the pre-mission logic of the experiment, Levin had a serious case. The LR instrument had detected metabolism-like activity in Martian soil.

Then came the retreat.

NASA did not accept the biological interpretation, chiefly because Viking’s gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer failed to detect organic compounds. No organics, no life — that became the official escape hatch. The LR result was reclassified as strange soil chemistry. Mars was declared biologically dead, at least for practical institutional purposes, and the agency moved on.

Except that later Mars missions have since detected organics.

Curiosity rover found organic molecules in Martian rocks. Perseverance rover has added further evidence of organic carbon in ancient sedimentary environments. Phoenix lander and later missions complicated the chemistry with perchlorates, which can destroy or alter organics during heating. The landers thrusters also spewed hydrazine and ammonia all over the landing site.

In other words, the old “Viking found no organics” objection has not aged well. It now looks less like a decisive refutation and more like NASA deliberately dodging the most significant scientific discovery of our age, and no one can say why.

Perchlorates are often invoked as the modern anti-Levin explanation. But that, too, is not the neat solution it is made out to be. Perchlorates may help explain why Viking failed to detect intact organics when soil was heated. They do not automatically explain the LR experiment itself.

The LR response involved wet chemistry, nutrient injection, gas evolution, heat sensitivity, repeatability at two sites, and kinetics Levin regarded as biological.

Some analyses have even argued for circadian-like modulation in the data, suggesting a process responding to the Martian day-night cycle. A simple oxidant reaction does not get to wear a lab coat and call itself a bacterium without reproducing the full pattern.

The obvious scientific response would have been to repeat the experiment with better tools.

That did not happen.

For half a century, Mars exploration has become increasingly sophisticated, while becoming strangely timid about the central biological question. We have drilled rocks, crushed rocks, baked rocks, sniffed rocks, vaporized rocks with lasers, mapped minerals, chased ancient rivers, photographed deltas, modelled habitability, and collected samples for eventual return.

All useful. All impressive. All beside the point if the question is extant life.

The agencies have become very comfortable asking whether Mars was once habitable. They are much less eager to ask whether Mars is currently inhabited.

That distinction matters. “Habitability” is the safe word. It sounds bold while avoiding the scandalous possibility that something is alive under the lander’s footpads. It lets mission planners pursue geology while wrapping the program in astrobiological perfume. But habitability is not biology. Organic carbon is not life. A dried riverbed is not metabolism. A rock crusher is not a microbiologist.

Those things are, however, grant bait for geology departments, to the detriment of the biology departments.

A serious modern test would not be difficult to imagine. Send a dedicated life-detection payload — Levin-style labeled nutrients, left- and right-handed chiral compounds, sterile controls, dry controls, wet controls, isotopic tracing, gas analysis, microscopy, oxidant assays, humidity and temperature monitoring, and repeated measurements across diurnal cycles. Test for metabolic selectivity. Test for chirality. Test whether the response survives cold but dies under sterilization. Test whether it follows environmental rhythms. Test whether active chemistry can be distinguished from active biology.

This is not science fiction. It is basic experimental discipline.

Given that NASA/JPL can land rovers the size of a Volkswagen Beetle safely on the surface, powered by nuclear energy for the long haul, there is no rational excuse to have ignored Levin’s results for half a century — unless you are hiding something.

And yet, somehow, the experiment that most directly challenged the official dead-Mars narrative has never been properly repeated on Mars. Not improved. Not falsified. Not confirmed. Just left in the attic like an embarrassing uncle at Thanksgiving.

That is the scandal.

If Levin was wrong, then prove it with a modern instrument. If perchlorates explain everything, demonstrate it under Martian conditions with proper controls. If the LR response was inorganic, reproduce the Viking curves in the lab and then on Mars. If the soil is dead, stop hiding behind “habitability” and show the corpse.

But if Levin was right, then Viking made the greatest biological discovery in human history — and the institutions responsible for following it up spent fifty years looking everywhere except directly at the thing that moved.

The fair conclusion is not that Mars life has been proven. It has not. The fair conclusion is sharper and more uncomfortable: Levin’s result remains unresolved because the experiment that could resolve it has not been flown.

Fifty years after Viking, the question is no longer merely whether there is life on Mars.

The question is why the people with rockets keep refusing to properly ask the question.

"Dark Mission" is a fantastic book, albeit very controversial to pry open the mind and explore just a tiny sample of what's waiting for us to remove our blinders. Knowledge is power, and information is currency, and thus anything interesting found out there will be kept deeply hidden, because those "in the know" most certainly don't want to share.

As the old saying in politics goes, "When you're up to your ass in alligators, it's hard to remember your first thought was to drain the swamp." The PTB are only too happy to keep throwing alligators at us to distract us from the really interesting stuff.

It is possible that our own Solar System is crawling with life, and the organizations we pay dearly for are deliberately not telling us about it, or are deliberately not looking--ask me no questions, I'll tell you no lies.

Every time we build new eyes, like Webb, we find that the Universe is pulsing with energy and all parts are connected to all other parts in ways we never imagined.

To paraphrase Socrates, "The more we know, the more we know we do not know."

I'm convinced our current civilization is just one in a long line of them, doomed to rise and fall perhaps because there's always a cabal who keep our most valuable secrets from us for their own profit--the most obvious being our true history.

I note that Japan's Hyabusa2 recently provided yet another proof of Tom van Flandern's exploded planet hypothesis, but even he wasn't willing to entertain the possibility of a cosmic war.

Meanwhile, the boys with the toys ain't sharing, and we rabble rousers can't seem to rally ourselves to force the truly important questions. Fear and suspicion keep us herded into mental and spiritual corrals, where only allowable thoughts are acceptable. If we stray too far, the PTB gather their ridicule patrol armies to humiliate us back into conformity. If that doesn't work, we get the Giordano Bruno treatment.

I haven't decided if our current iteration is more or less restrictive than the previous ones, but my wager would be on the former. The Spanish Inquisition never ended, it simply changed clothes.
